Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology

Andrzej Obuchowicz was born in 1963 in Zielona Góra. In 1987, he graduated in applied physics from the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. In 1992, he obtained a Ph.D. in physics from the Institute of Physics of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, and in 2004, he received a D.Sc. degree (habilitation) in technical sciences in the field of automatic control and robotics (global optimization and technical diagnostics) from the Faculty of Electronics of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. In 2015, the President of the Republic of Poland granted him a professorial title in technical sciences.

Professor Obuchowicz's scientific research focuses on metaheuristic methods of searching the solution space, global optimization and adaptation issues, evolutionary computations, artificial neural networks, image recognition techniques and their applications in medical and technical diagnostics, and discrete event dynamics systems. He is the author or a co-author of over 130 scientific papers, including four monographs, over 30 articles in journals, and 25 chapters in monographs. He has been the executor or manager of numerous works within the framework of grants financed by the European Union and the National Science Centre in Poland. He is a member of dozens of scientific committees of international and national conferences.

Professor A. Obuchowicz has been a member of the Lubuskie Scientific Society since 1994 (in the years 1994-2022 he served as its scientific secretary). Since 1999 he has been a member of the Polish Society of Neural Networks. In 2007 he became a member of the Commission for Computer Science and Automatic Control of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Poznań Branch. Since 2008 he has been a member of the IEEE Society (Computer Science, Computational Intelligence, Engineering in Medicine and Biology Societies). In 2020, he was elected to the Board of Curators of Department IV of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Since 1992, Prof. Andrzej Obuchowicz has been associated with the Zielona Góra academic community. At the University of Zielona Góra, he has so far held the following positions: the head of the Division of Systems Analysis and Intelligent Computing (1999-2008), a deputy dean for development (2005-2008), the head of Ph.D. studies in the disciplines of computer science, electrical engineering, as well as automatic control and robotics (2005-2012), the dean of the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical and Control Engineering (2012-2016 and 2020-2024), the head of the Division of Information Technology (since 2018), and the chairman of the Commission for Ph.D. Procedures in the disciplines of computer science (2008-2019) and technical computer science (2020-2024).

Since 2005, Prof. Obuchowicz has been particularly involved in teaching in the field of computer science, first as a substantive supervisor and then the chairman of the team for ensuring the quality of education. In 2011, by the decision of the Presidium of the Polish Accreditation Committee, this field of study received accreditation with distinction. In the years 2005-2008 he was a member of the Accreditation Committee of Universities of Technology and was appointed as one again in 2017.
